As the name suggests the Surinam cherry is named after the northern country situated in the South American region which is believed to be its place of origin. It is also known as the Cayenne cherry or Brazilian cherry.
This plant came to the continent as a result of the Portuguese voyagers that brought it from India. This was brought to Italy than it reached to the American continents.
It was first planted in Florida in 1930 but was meant for targeted reductions as it was considered as harmful species. That’s why it is also known as Florida cherry. It is usually found in the in most of the tropical regions across the globe in the different regions that include Philippines, Hawaii and the West African country of Nigeria. It is widely cultivated on commercial level in Argentina, Venezuela and Colombia; as well as the coastal regions of Central America.


This plant is suggested to have its origin in the South Asian continent from where it was brought to Italy where it was classified as one of the plants species. The Portuguese voyagers have taken this from Goa, India and the seeds were taken to from Brazil to India like the cashew nut.
This Surinam cherry is a member of the Myrtaceae family that is consisting of clove, allspice, guava and eucalyptus plants. There are two varieties of the plant that are present. One is the common bright-red and the second is rarer dark-crimson.

The medicinal qualities of the cherries are not yet established but it is largely used as a food item. It is advisable to discard it in under ripe stage. These are mainly for local consumptions as their delicate skin makes it difficult to store them and transport on commercial level. The acidic taste of the Surinam cherry makes it stand out of the other in this category of fruits.

These are largely used as part of diet in different ways. These are very much liked by children and attract them because of its typical sour and sweet taste with pinch of acidic twist.  These cherries are having pleasant aromatic flavour that is loved by everyone. Usually these are sprinkled with little sugar and refrigerated to come up as toping for the desserts and the other preparation like ice creams. The Surinam cherries are a part of the cupcakes, salads and custard pudding. Apart there are jellies and jam prepared from these cherries along with pickles, squash and syrups. In the Brazilian regions it is often fermented after making the juice to convert it into vinegar or wine, as well as the distilled liquor.


Surinam cherry, which is also known as the Pitanga, is small in size and has bright red color. It is having three to four ribs on it that resembles to a cherry. Its taste is sweet to sour with typical acidic punch. These are known for the distinct resinous flavor that is diminished after ripening of the fruit and the color also turns from bring red to crimson dark red. It is typically green or orange cherries while the fruits are in nascent stage and under ripe.
